Driving Over Wildlife
A proposed underpass for wildlife will reduce collisions--and increase public safety.
Soon you'll be able to drive over wildlife without running them over. A proposed underpass for wildlife/overpass for cars will reduce collisions and increase public safety. The stretch of Highway 21 between Boise and Idaho City is popular with both deer and cars. Over 60 car-wildlife collisions have occurred in the last 8 months in this area. Fences will funnel deer, elk and other wildlife to the underpass.
Modifying existing highways with wildlife-friendly underpasses is an important conservation tool that should be expanded to other hazardous roadways.
The best option, of course, is to avoid new road construction in important wildlife areas. Incidentally, this is one of the reasons why Idaho's wilderness areas have some of the best wildlife habitat in the West. This is also why we are working to protect other areas like the Boulder-White Clouds as wilderness. In the meantime, give wildlife a brake when you pass through posted wildlife areas. The life you save may be your own.
