How can you get your share of delicious local foods? Join a CSA now! We'll tell you how.

Getting Your Fruits and Veggies Is Easy!

bounty of the season

Join a community supported agriculture (CSA) program in your area and enjoy fresh-from-the-farm vegetables and fruits all season long.

Now is the time to sign up. The nifty LocalHarvest website provides an abundance of options in your area. Just enter your zip code to find out which farmers want to put food on your family's table. The cost to participate generally ranges from $300 to $400 for the season.

Most CSAs offer a robust selection of fruits and vegetables. Many participants find they enjoy expanding their cooking skills by experimenting with recipes for unique foods such as fava beans, mustard greens, and bok choy.

To help you in your culinary adventures, consider investing in a helpful cookbook. Two to check out are Simply In Season, expanded edition by Cathleen Hockman-Wert and Mary Beth Lind, and The Farm To Table Cookbook: The Art of Eating Locally by Ivy Manning.

Join a CSA this spring and enjoy a season of local and healthful food. Not only is CSA membership a wonderful way to eat healthy, it is an easy way to help protect Idaho’s quality of life. Your choice supports local families, improves air quality, and reduces pollution.

Enjoy the season!

Coeur d'Alene / Dalton Gardens CSA

Posted by Terry Harris at Mar 10, 2010 09:10 AM
For anyone interested in joining a CSA in N. Idaho, Kootenai Environmental Alliance is starting one up this year in Dalton Gardens. As part of our Local Food Share program, half of the subscriptions will be reserved for low-income subscribers. We have a VERY limited number of full subscriptions still available -- call us in the KEA offices for an application.

Great information!

Thanks for information about the KEA program. I hope it does well--and the idea catches on in other areas!

Global Gardens CSA

Global Gardens is an agricultural training program for refugees resettled in Boise, ID. We sponsor refugee agriculture projects at 7 locations in Boise and Eagle and also offer a small CSA. You can find out all the details at our website.

The CSAs listed at the local harvest website aren't as close to home as they could be...the search results I got were 26 miles away. The Idaho Statesman recently listed some of the closest and best ones that I know of. Find a farmer that suits you!!

Thanks Katie!

Katie, thanks for the post about Global Gardens. This great program not only has all of the benefits of a CSA, but also benefits folks who are newly settled in America. Great work!

Another great local option in N. Idaho

Posted by Meadow Summers at Mar 10, 2010 03:17 PM
Another great way to buy local all year long is Six Rivers Market in North Idaho and Idaho's Bounty in the Ketchum/Boise area, both nonprofit cooperatives based on the web. Support a variety of local producers by shopping online and picking up your order each week, or having them delivered to your door with Idaho's Bounty (Six Rivers hopes to add delivery soon). Fresh veggies, greenhouse greens, cheeses, a variety of meats, grains and more--all year long. For more info see: www.sixriversmarket.org or www.idahosbounty.org.
