Learn how to save your family and the planet from vampire power. Vampire power is electricity used by TVs, stereos and chargers when they are turned off.

Vampire power is a ghoulish and ghastly energy waster in your home!

Stereos, televisions, DVD players, phone chargers and computers use a bit of electricity even when they're turned off. While each device may suck a small amount, collectively this adds up to 10% of home electricity use. Worst of all, this energy is completely wasted.

Slaying the vampire saves you money and helps the planet!

At home, eliminating vampire power reduces your carbon footprint by 10%. Because vampires suck power late at night when devices are allegedly off, this 10% reduction means you use 10% less coal-fired power.

Across the country, eliminating this 10% would reduce the energy demand equivalent to 30 coal-fired power plants. And we could save enough money to send every kid in America to a Hannah Montana concert!

Luckily, vampire power is easy to slay!

Tonight, turn off the lights and look around your home for those little lights shining from your stereo, computer and entertainment center. Think of these lights as vampire eyes sucking electricity and money and in turn spewing out carbon. Then

  • Slay the beast by unplugging the device
  • Plug several devices into a power strip to make unplugging them even easier
  • Check out an energy kit from the library

Check your knowledge with this great quiz from National Geographic. Share something you learn or your score in the comments section below.

Scientist are working on a more permanent solution, but until then, we all must do our part by slaying the electricity vampire.

Waste is Weak

Who woulda thought ?: Tackling waste of energy brings the best results at the least cost in money, environment, etc. etc. etc. !

There's a lot we can do as consumers, I look forward to learning more about that. Maybe even one day, dirty-energy will be co$tly enough that there'll be that market incentive too !

I hope you'll post about some more of the commercial and industrial scale "vampires" that we can collectively slay as well ! There's gotta be huge provocative savings that so few folk ever even think about !

Thanks Ben !
