Wild Idaho—Redfish Lake

Posted by Rick Johnson at May 19, 2011 12:20 PM |

As sure as spring returns, it's time for ICL folks to head up to Redfish Lake for the annual Wild Idaho conference.

Wild Idaho.

Years ago we gathered up a bunch of words used to describe home, tossed them in a pot, put on the heat, and we cooked them down. In the end we had two words: Wild Idaho.

In 1986 we started a conference at Redfish Lake focused on ICL’s public lands work and that’s what we called it. Wild Idaho.

This weekend I’ll return to Redfish for one of my rituals of Spring, joining more than 100 other celebrants including a U.S. Senator, an emissary from the U.S. Secretary of Interior, a bunch of highly capable conservationists, a terrific bartender and hardworking kitchen crew. And a bunch of folks like you. All in all, it’s a gathering of friends, people who love Idaho.  Wild Idaho.

Maybe you’ll be there, too. If not, let me tell you this: be there next year. We gather each year, the weekend before Memorial Day weekend. No secret handshake required. Just a love of Idaho.

Beginning Friday night, we high five old friends, meet new friends, settle in at the bar, gather for dinner, and spend the next couple days catching up on conservation news from around the state. We also have some fun field trips, and do what’s most important: reconnect, ignore the desk stuff, and focus on each other and this place we call home.

You know the view: Redfish Lake takes a long, seven mile arc from the Lodge and the majesty of the Sawtooth Range rises up to fill the sky. This weekend it’ll be crisp and cold, snow still around, and maybe some—maybe a lot—of ice on the lake.

Almost time to go...
