Fight the Food Waste!

— filed under:

Use some simple tools to cut back on the amount of food you throw away.

Are you ready for this? Americans throw away about 25% of the food we consume—about 100 billion pounds of food waste a year.

Let's try to make that number a little accessible. If a tank weighs 60 tons or about 120,000 pounds, it would take about 84,000 tanks to equal the amount of food we throw away each year.

To reduce the amount of food you throw away, just remember the old adage: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

  • Reduce the amount of food you purchase by planning ahead. Menu planning will save you money while making sure you eat all you purchase.
  • Reuse leftovers. Get creative with leftovers—scramble them up with eggs the next morning or throw them into a soup.
  • Recycle. Consider composting your food scraps. This will provide a nice soil augment for your garden and can be relatively simple.
