After some research into milk production, I'm going to continue buying my local favorite!

It's Local, But Is It Organic?

Happy milk cow!

by Marcy Westover, Membership Assistant

I try to buy local whenever I can, but recently I've been concerned about the added hormones in milk. I wasn't sure if I should continue buying local milk at the Boise Co-Op or change to an organic brand that traveled farther to get to my fridge.

After speaking with Bill Stoltzus of Cloverleaf Creamery in Buhl, I feel better about drinking the local Cloverleaf milk. Here are a few of the many benefits:

  • No added hormones to grass-fed, pastured Holsteins
  • Heated only once during pasteurization, keeping it as fresh as possible
  • 3-5 day turnaround from bottling to market
  • Reusable glass bottles

It's not certified organic, but it's close and tastes great! Although Bill has no interest in certifying as organic, he's deeply interested in sustainable, humane practices and fresh quality milk for the local community.

You can find Cloverleaf and other local dairy products at Idaho Preferred.
