Ways to Reduce the Trash you Produce.

— filed under:

A little shift in perspective can help you reduce the amount of trash your home produces.

What if the garbage man stopped taking our trash away? Would we have to find new ways to use our garbage because we would otherwise be overwhelmed by it? Probably.

It's a frightening thought, right? Chances are, none of us is going to get to a "zero waste" lifestyle without big changes. But it's easy to make some small shifts and reduce the amount of trash you produce at home. Here are some ideas:

  1. Use paper bags or newspapers to wrap presents. A little twine and a sprig of rosemary and you have yourself a fancy wrapped gift.
  2. Reuse plastic vegetable bags. Store these puppies and use them the next time you go to the store.
  3. Reuse glass containers. Why buy Tupperware when salsa containers and mayo jars are perfect to store your lunch or leftovers?
  4. Cook food at home. I am a big proponent of cooking as a means for reducing waste. It's cheaper and healthier—you don't pay for the energy to package food and you know exactly what's in your meal.
