Replace and Reuse Plastic Water Containers!
Just because you don't want to drink from your old plastic water containers doesn't mean you can't rethink their use.
It might be time to retire that old water bottle that was your trusty water container for all those years of outdoor fun.
About a year ago, studies showed that water storage containers made out of a plastic material called polycarbonate, leach Bisphenol A (BPA) into stored water. BPA has since been linked to certain forms of cancer.
There are non-polycarbonate alternatives out there. If you need to replace your old water bottle, check out Klean Kanteen, Sigg, or the new CamelBak products.
But don't throw out your old water container yet. These containers can still be used for other purposes, rather than sitting in the landfill. Here are some ideas:
- Fill it with water, freeze it, and use in place of bagged ice in a cooler.
- If your freezer is often empty, stock it with full water containers to keep the temperature of your freezer down and reduce your energy consumption.
- Get creative. Use it as a temporary container for watering potted plants, storing pencils or paintbrushes, try something new and share it with us!
