Idaho's school children do their part to keep Idaho green.

Take a Walk on the Wild Side!

My daughter at Walk To School Day

For many people, walking to work is not an easy option. Long distances, time constraints and health issues can make walking unrealistic. But kids can do what many adults cannot—walk to and from school.

The National Center for Safe Routes to School (SR2S) helps school children, including kids with disabilities, find ways to get to school without depending on car trips with adults.

Approximately 20% of Boise’s morning traffic is generated by parents driving to schools. SR2S programs keep cars off streets, improving air quality and traffic around the schools.

Many Idaho schools have SR2S programs. Learn what the Idaho Transportation Department is doing to promote SR2S. The Treasure Valley YMCA is also a great resource for SR2S.

So next time you see a pack of self-reliant school kids hiking off to class with their backpacks full and their shoes (more or less) tied, smile and think about how their small steps are helping to keep Idaho communities awesome!
