Smart To-Go Containers
Learn how you can choose wisely at the to-go counter.
Not only are plastic and Styrofoam to-go containers culprits of increasing landfill volumes and litter, but they can also be very unhealthy for us. Styrene, which leaches from plastic and Styrofoam into our food, can have extensive health consequences such as hormone disruption. Plus it is a suspected carcinogen.
Generally, the best option is to avoid disposable food and drink containers altogether. Slow down and enjoy your lunch at the restaurant using real plates, glasses and mugs. Or bring your own containers for takeout and reuse quality ones that you may pick up. For avoiding health concerns, glass is the best for food and drink. If these options are not possible, there are many other green alternatives.
Look for containers and cutlery that are compostable, biodegradable, recycled, and recyclable and encourage your favorite coffee shops and restaurants to use them.
