The Meat We Eat
Ever wondered about the carbon footprint of meat?
When we talk about ways to combat global warming, the conversation turns to hybrid cars or solar panels, but what about the greenhouse gas emissions caused by the food we eat? The United Nations has noted that 18% of all global greenhouse gas emissions are from animal production.
To put this in perspective, that's more than transportation, which is responsible for 14% of emissions. Encouraging people to eat less meat is an issue many of us have avoided for fear of appearing too radical. But now even Fox News is advocating for reducing meat consumption.
We don’t all have to be tofu-eating vegans to make a difference. (I, for one, will never give up cheese.) But reducing the amount of meat we eat is a easy way to reduce our contribution to global warming. Plus it doesn’t require fancy new technology or cost us anything.
And when you do eat meat, try to buy local! That, too, will help keep down your carbon footprint.
