Office Composting

— filed under:

Why not? With just a little organizing, you can reduce the waste generated at your office.

Recycling soda cans, plastic and paper in most offices is a breeze. What about reducing kitchen waste? Think coffee grounds, banana peels, orange rinds....try office composting!

Here are a few simple steps to help you get started—don't worry, it shouldn't smell:

  1. Put someone in charge of collection and handling.
  2. Buy a size-appropriate rigid container (think covered 13-gallon trash can).
  3. Place the container in the kitchen area with a label on it.
  4. If you would like to try your hand at vermicomposting (composting with worms), purchase some red worms from your local bait store and add them to the bin. If not, stick to adding food scraps and paper waste.
  5. Decide what to do with the compost. If your coworkers have home gardens, let them take it home. Their flower or vegetable gardens will enjoy the added nutrients. Or donate it to a local community garden. (In Boise, you can donate to BUGS or the refugee gardens.)

Have fun!
