Plan Ahead
Avoid disastrous outings and protect the environment at the same time by planning ahead.
Whenever you decide to go on that next hiking, backpacking, boating or camping trip, plan ahead.
Of course, you should know how to "leave no trace." But also check with the Forest Service, BLM or Park Service, depending on where you plan to go, to find out what the current conditions are and where you can get maps and other information about your destination.
The Boise National Forest has a good list of outdoor safety and ethics tips.
Also, always call the local ranger station to ask about regulations specific to where you are going. For example, the Sawtooth National Forest prohibits campfires within 200 yards of the alpine lakes in the White Cloud Mountains. This prohibition protects shorelines, vegetation and trees and preserves the experience for others.
Planning ahead requires very little on your part. Investing that small bit of time will pay off in promoting your outdoor experience and protecting the land.
