Save the Switchbacks
Shortcutting switchbacks might save you some time, but sticking to the trail protects the places we all love.
If I had a dollar for every user-created shortcut through a switchback that I have found, I would have amassed enough money for a modest investment.
So what's the problem, you ask? The trail is right above or below you. Why not save some time by taking a shortcut instead of following those long, boring switchbacks?
Cutting the switchbacks causes erosion by trampling soil and vegetation. Switchbacks are constructed on steep slopes to prevent this very problem and protect the places we love.
Next time you think about cutting a switchback, think twice. You owe it to the place and everyone else who wants to enjoy it.
