This Week in Conservation from the Statehouse

Posted by Courtney Washburn at Mar 12, 2010 01:00 PM |

Read what happened with conservation issues in the Idaho Statehouse the week of March 8.

Thanks to all the elected officials and supporters who attended our legislative reception last night. And congratulations to Rep. Wendy Jaquet (D-25) who received an award from Conservation Voters for Idaho!

Local Food
A resolution supporting local food is working its way through the legislative process. Local food is good for local farmers, good for your health, and a great way to reduce the environment impacts of food production and transportation.

Conservation Funding
Senate Bill 1343 passed the Senate and will have a public hearing in the House Resources and Conservation Committee. This bill would create a fund to protect and enhance working lands that provide natural resource benefits for all Idahoans.

Cattle Secrets
Unfortunately, SB 1346 brought by the Idaho Cattle Association passed the Senate Agriculture Committee. Check out the coverage in the Idaho Statesman and a great editorial in the Mountain Express. I am hopeful the bill will be amended to allow more public access to information regarding cattle operations.

Bruneau Dunes State Park
Just when you thought we were done with the state parks issue, the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation wants to open up the scenic Bruneau Sand Dunes to dune buggies. In just three minutes, you can help protect this scenic area!

Look for more news next week!
