Energy
The Idaho Conservation League works to reduce greenhouse gases through energy efficiency and clean energy.
Idaho families and businesses need dependable, affordable energy to prosper and thrive. ICL works to ensure Idaho has a sustainable energy policy and is doing its part to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
We engage with the Idaho Public Utilities Commission, the Idaho Office of Energy Resources, electric utilities like Idaho Power, and the Idaho Legislature on aggressive energy efficiency programs and clean energy development.
So, how can we reduce power plant pollution yet still meet Idahoans' energy needs? It's a two-step process:
- Reduce our energy demand by increasing our efficiency
- Replace existing coal-burning power plants with clean energy sources such as wind, sun, and geothermal
Increasing Efficiency
We must become more efficient with our energy use by replacing outdated, inefficient appliances and equipment in our homes, schools and offices.
ICL promotes an energy efficiency policy that increases comfort while reducing our energy bills, avoids degrading our natural resources and frees up existing energy resources to attract new job growth.
Encouraging Clean Energy Sources
Idaho has abundant wind, solar and geothermal sources that can provide affordable and clean energy. These clean energy sources can replace much of the power we now import.
While Idaho is known for our large hydro dams, we still import about 45% of our electricity from coal-fired plants. We generate another 8% from natural gas. So Idaho is vulnerable to volatile prices and rising costs. Plus, burning these fuels contributes to climate change.
