Idaho Selkirks
The Idaho Selkirks are home to rare wildlife and stunning backcountry trails.
The Idaho Selkirk Mountains are home to rare wildlife such as mountain caribou, grizzly bear, lynx and wolverine. Old growth forests line the bottoms of deep canyons. Cold clean water flows from mountain streams. Backcountry trails offer solitude and splendor. These are just a few things that we love about the Selkirk Mountains.
Unfortunately, these values are at risk. The last herd of caribou south of the Canadian Border faces the threat of extinction. These animals are considered the most endangered mammal in the country. ICL is working to build support for a plan to protect habitat deemed critical to the survival and recovery of caribou in the Selkirk Mountains.
The U.S. Forest Service is also revising a plan for a proposed wilderness area in the Selkirk Mountains dating back to 1987. New boundaries are beginning to take shape with some good changes and some bad changes.
While treasured areas such as Long Canyon and Parker Creek would be added to the proposed wilderness area, boundary changes would leave out the headwaters of the Pack River which was included in the 1987 plan.
Please tell the Forest Service you support the additions of Long Canyon and Parker Creek but that the agency should keep existing proposed wilderness lands in the Upper Pack River intact.
