Overnight Trek into the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve

Central Idaho is now home to the only dark sky reserve in the United States — the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve — and it’s one of only 12 in the world.

To celebrate, Sun Valley Trekking and the Idaho Conservation League are teaming up to bring you the Milky Way. Join us to experience the night sky like nowhere else. You don’t want to miss one of the most unique backcountry mountain star gazing adventures on the planet! Based at the Coyote Yurts, perched at 8,700 feet above Sun Valley, you’ll feel right at home deep in the wilds of Central Idaho with all of the comforts needed to relax and enjoy a night of dark sky viewing.

What We’ll Do

  • Day 1: You can hike 9 miles along the beautiful Adams Gulch Trail to Coyote Yurts. Or you can ride the shuttle van that is taking your personal equipment to the yurts ahead of your arrival. After an optional short hike (3 miles) rounding Fox Peak, we will roll into the Coyote Yurts, where the barbecue will be smoking; cold drinks and appetizers, waiting. As night falls, part-time local and renowned astronomer Matt Benjamin will present on the celestial realm. Because this weekend is close to the climax of the annual Perseid meteor shower, you may see between 20 and 40 meteors an hour. Plus, we will have a telescope on hand for you to peer deeper into the cosmos. If you’re an aspiring photographers, Matt can teach you how to use your DSLR camera for astrophotography.
  • Day 2: After breakfast, you will pack your belongings, which will be shuttled to town while we head out on the hike known as “edge of the world.” Our destination is the spectacular Oregon Gulch Trail, dropping 1,800 ft (over 4 miles) through fields of wildflowers and burned forest and along ridge lines down Oregon Gulch. The shuttle van will meet us at the trailhead and bring us back to Ketchum. Other hiking opportunities exist, depending on your interest.

More Details

The cost for this unique adventure is $580 a person, required in full when you make your reservation. This amount includes hut fees, guide fees, shuttle fees, the educational presentation and scrumptious food (dinner on Day 1 and breakfast and lunch on Day 2), with a portion of the proceeds supporting ICL’s work.

You can bring your own alcoholic drinks if you’d like, and we’ll provide the ice. Bring your own clothing, toiletries and sleeping bag, although you can rent sleeping bags locally if necessary.
