Geology of the Pioneer Mountains

Rock lovers and nature nerds are encouraged to join ICL staff member Josh Johnson for a beautiful, classic Sun Valley hike — the Pioneer Cabin loop in the Pioneer Mountains. In addition to the fantastic views, participants will learn about the unique geology of the Pios and how it connects to ICL’s public lands work. Josh has a master’s degree in geology and several years’ experience as an interpretive guide.

Please consider the difficulty of the hike before registering. The hike is approximately 9 miles round-trip with 3,000 feet of elevation gain (lots of switchbacks!). Bring sturdy boots, rain gear, and warm layers.

We will meet at the ICL office at 8:30 am to carpool to the trailhead. If you plan to attend this hike, be sure to bring the following:

  •  Plenty of water (3 liters recommended)
  •  Lunch + snacks!
  •  Sunscreen
  •  Hat and sunglasses
  •  Warm layers (down jacket, fleece, etc.)
  •  Rain jacket/outer shell
  • Sturdy hiking boots
  • Trekking poles (optional)

This hike is limited to 10 participants.  Call or email to reserve your spot.
