ICL Winter Snowshoe Series 2017-18
This winter, ICL will be offering monthly snowshoe hikes in the Ketchum/Sun Valley area covering an array of topics ranging from glacial geology to winter ecology to avalanche science. This series will be lead by Josh Johnson, an ICL staff member with a passion for winter environmental education and several years experience as a naturalist and interpretive guide. The first snowshoe hike will take place on Galena Pass on Dec 13.
Space is limited and registration is required. Specific details and logistics for each event in the series will be made available in the coming weeks. To sign up for any snowshoe hike, or for more information, contact the Idaho Conservation League’s Ketchum office or email Josh.
A Landscape Shaped by Snow and Ice Snowshoe Hike
Winter lovers and nature nerds are encouraged to join ICL staff member Josh Johnson for a beautiful 1.5 hour-long snowshoe hike on Galena Summit. In addition to the fantastic views, participants will learn about how snow and ice have shaped the landscape in the rugged mountains of central Idaho. Josh has a masters degree in geology and several years experience as a naturalist and interpretive guide.
The snowshoe hike is approximately 2 miles long with minimal elevation gain. The hike will be at high elevation (>8,500 ft) so we ask that participants consider that before registering. Bring snow boots and warm layers for all kinds of weather. You may bring your own snowshoes or rent them beforehand.
We will meet to carpool at 9 am and begin hiking by 10 am. We plan to return back to our cars around 11:30 am. Additional logistics will be shared when you register. If you plan to attend this hike, be sure to bring the following:
- Plenty of water (2 liters recommended)
- Hat, gloves, and sunglasses
- Warm layers (down jacket, fleece, etc.)
- Rain jacket/outer shell
- Snow boots
- Snowshoes (rentals are available at Backwoods Mountain Sports or Elephant’s Perch in Ketchum)
This snowshoe hike is limited to 10 participants. Call our Central Idaho office or email Josh early to reserve your spot.
