House Bill 90, sponsored by Rep. Jason Monks (R-Nampa) would allow for the sale of wider all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and heavier utility type vehicles (UTVs) in Idaho.

The problem is, you wouldn’t be able to legally use the 55″ ATVs on ATV trails on state or federal lands. That’s because those trails are limited to 50″ vehicles. Selling the larger ATVs could result in people illegally riding oversized vehicles on trails, causing damage or trail expansion, which can impact water quality, fish habitat and other resources. To boot, state and federal funds trail maintenance funds are already stressed, so we’d be making an already bad situation worse.

The weight restriction on UTVs would also be removed, and maximum width would also be adjusted from 74 inches to 80 inches. This change is less significant, since UTVs are already restricted to roads.
